St. Thomas & St. John, West Indies Index to Probate Records, 1717-1814
Copied by Lolly Prime
Translated and Edited by Gary T. Horlacher

Introduction

In the National Archives (Rigsarkiv) of Denmark in Copenhagen, there are several drawers of card indexes. Among these is on drawer with indexes to various volumes of probate records for the Danish West Indies islands of St. Thomas and St. John. While on a trip to Copenhagen in the fall of 1996, Lolly Prime typed each of the cards in these probate indexes into her computer as she read them in the Danish language.

Using her typed transcript, Danish phrases and words in these various indexes were translated. Many of the cards were cross-referenced. Since a general index to all of these cards eliminates the need for cross references, those redundant references were eliminated. If one finds a reference and needs to find the original document, the Danish names for the various volumes is also listed in brackets under the English name for the volume. These records are all available in the Danish National Archives in Copenhagen.

A few of the volumes that were indexed were listed as "Unaccessible" [Utilgængelig]. Because of the humid tropical conditions and storm in the islands, many of the documents were in bad condition when they were brought to the archives and were restricted from use. Many of these have been or are still waiting to be restored and preserved. If the volume you need is listed as "unaccessible" you can try anyway and perhaps they may have these available now.

Underneath the person's name and occupation/status is the date of the probate or the date of death (+) of the individual concerned. This is indented one time. Underneath that and double indented is the name of a spouse or parent and often in parenthesis the names of their former spouses. Underneath that and triple indented is the page number(s) in the volume, where the person's probate begins.

There were 25 volumes of probate records that were indexed covering a period from 1717-1814. These include separate probate books for the military, the government officials, the plantation owners (listed as just Planters in this register), and inhabitants. The book of registration and assessment gives the deceased's name, his heirs and their guardians names, and a registration and appraisal of all the deceased person's property. The Session record is an accounting of the probate sessions that passed through the court.

The general index at the end of this volume is to all 25 volumes and should be a valuable tool to researchers in the colonial history and genealogy of the Danish West Indies (Gary T. Horlacher, March 6, 1997).
