Character of the Inhabitants on the Island of St. John - 1722 Inhabitants of St. John
From a letter by Erik Bredal to the West Indies Company
by Gary T. Horlacher, 2001

NOTE: This document (census) was first identified by George Tyson, director of the Landmark Society in St. Croix. It was shared with me by David Knight of St. Thomas. There are many interesting documents like this hidden within the various records in the Danish National Archive in Copenhagen. This document is found in the West Indies and Guineas Archive in the Danish National Archives: 4. Direktionenes korrespondance, Breve og dokumenter fra Vestindien #95, 1719 28/5-1724 27/7. Unfortunately such documents are like little gems hidden in a haystack and take a lot of work and effort to identify. The letter was dated 15 Jul 1722 and the document (census) was dated 20 Jul 1722 on St. Thomas.
