Unlike Hungarian, the Slovak language has diacritic symbols for both vowels and consonants, controlling inflection and pronunciation. These need to be considered when looking up towns in gazetteers, or even words in dictionaries. One of the most useful Slovak dictionaries is Edward Kovac, Jr.’s The Practical English-Slovak Slovak-English Dictionary (n.p.: K. Enterprises, Inc., 1983). Many of Internet sites also contain links to on-line dictionaries and other language guides for Slovak, like this site.
