Getting Started with Your Slovak Family History Research

The town of origin is the most important piece of information needed to begin your research into Slovak ancestry. Often a determination of locality is more difficult than adding four or five new generations to the pedigree once the location is known. With the knowledge of the town name, there are several resources to help determine the family’s faith and where the records of the family will have been deposited. If the town of origin is not known, research requirements will vary. There are no indexed sources allowing country-wide searches for inhabitants or surnames. Although emigration resources and a variety of records from families living in Slovakia today can aid the researcher, interviews with family members and a careful search of all home sources are often the greatest help in finding clues to a precise location in Slovakia. U.S. sources such as immigration records, naturalization, and even culturally-oriented church records will also be of tremendous value.

One of the first things a family historian needs to explore when working on his or her family history is learning about the basic records resources. As your research continues, you will likely find it vital that you understand more about Slovakia's history, and specifically, the country's historical jurisdictions and boundary changes.

Learning about culturally specific naming customs, specifically Slovak naming patterns, can be very helpful in unraveling family puzzles. Take some time to read resources and learn about naming customs and naming patterns.
