Romanian Maps

Romania is one of the modern countries of Europe. If you look on a map of the 19th century or earlier you may have a hard time finding it because what is today Romania was once part of several countries: Hungarian Empire (Transylvania, Banat), Moldavia, Wallachia, etc. Here are two maps that might help you relate these earlier areas to the modern country:

The Family History Library recently published a guide called the Romanian Letter Writing guide which you can use to compose letters asking for genealogy from Romanian archives. I don't see it on their website, but you can order their latest "Family History Materials List" it should be listed there. All of the local parishes in Romania have turned over their early church records to regional state archives. For this reason it is important to learn which state the town where your ancestors were from belonged to. Once you know the state, you can write to the state address. There is a list of addresses for each of the state archives in Poland (thanks to Heidi Sugden for creating this list for us!).
