Karina Morales
Karina Morales is a professional genealogist who graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's degree in Family History and Genealogy in 2007.
She has always had a passion for learning about people, and values the knowledge and understanding that comes from studying people's histories. Growing up in Chicago, she gained a love for diversity and the uniqueness of every individual's background. Something else that added to her appetite for learning about history was traveling to Mexico with her family every summer. Through these trips she learned about her own heritage, but also gained an appreciation for the history of the United States she learned in school. When she learned that BYU offered a degree in Family History and Genealogy, she knew pursuing this degree would be a great opportunity for her to focus on the things she valued most: families and history.
The focus of her studies at BYU was Hispanic research with her experience being mostly in the records of Spain and Mexico, but is well-versed with most aspects of 19th and 20th Century United States research. Aside from her coursework, she also worked as a research assistant on a project of reconstructing the families of a small village in eighteenth-century Spain by analyzing the parish records of the town. This job helped improve her ability to read difficult handwriting and become familiar with Catholic parish records that are very valuable in Hispanic research.
During her internship in Spain, Karina was assigned to oversee an expansive genealogical research project for a client that she and six of her colleagues worked on together. This gave her great experience in learning about client's expectations and about working with others on a research case.
