If ONE of your grandparents were born in Ireland, you can obtain citizenship in the Republic of Ireland by documenting your grandparent and your descent from him or her. Our firm can help you to undertake the application process and to gather all of the documents necessary for your application to be successful. Our team of Irish experts has over 15 years of years professional research experience to help make the process as efficient and effective as possible. Every year, Irish embassies and consulates consider some 10,000-15,000 applications for Irish citizenship through what is called the "Foreign Births Register." When you obtain Irish citizenship through a grandparent born in Ireland, the formal process includes registering your birth in Ireland's "Foreign Births Register."
Your application for Irish citizenship through a grandparent may take a year or more time to process. Thus, we recommend that you make your application as complete and correct as possible before submitting it. You will need to submit original documentation to clearly establish your own identity and your relation to your parent and your Irish-born grandparent.

Irish Genealogy and Your Family History Documents Needed
The following is a summary of the documents usually needed for the application, to provide you with a general idea of what you will need in most circumstances. However, this list should not be treated as definitive. For an official listing of documents needed, as well as additional details about the type and content of documents required, you should see an official Irish government web site, such as that of the Embassy of Ireland in Washington, D.C.
Concerning your Irish-born grandparent, 3 documents are normally required for the application:
1. An official copy of the grandparent's full, long form Irish birth
certificate: Ireland began to centrally register civil birth record in 1864 (see "civil registration"). If your grandparent's birth was not registered or if it occurred before 1864, a church christening record (see "church records") may be acceptable as a substitute.
2. An official copy of the grandparent's marriage license/certificate.
3. If the grandparent is deceased, an official copy of the grandparent's death certificate; if the grandparent is living, a current official photo I.D. (such as a driver's license or passport).
If you would like our assistance in obtaining these records, please ask us for a free estimate.
Concerning your parent born to this Irish-born grandparent, you will normally also need 3 documents:
1. An official copy of your parent's birth certificate: This document must show your grand parents' names, their places of birth and their ages at the time of your parent's birth.
2. An official copy of your parents' marriage license/certificate.
3. If the parent is deceased, an official copy of the parent's death certificate; if the parent is living, a current official photo I.D.
If you would like our assistance in obtaining these records, please ask us for a free estimate.
Regarding yourself (the applicant), you will need these documents:
1. An official copy of your birth certificate: It must show your parents'
names, places of birth and ages at the time of your birth.
2. If your name has changed since birth, you must show documentation of this. For example, if you changed your name when you married, you will need to provide an official copy of your marriage license/certificate.
3. Two recent passport type photographs.
4. Notarized copy of current US passport (if held).
5. Notarized copies of three additional proofs of identity.
