Treaty of Trianon and other Boundary Changes
E. Wade Hone, 2002
An important element in Hungarian research is the dramatic changes in the country’s boundaries through the years. Many areas called Hungary before 1919 are now parts of Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, or the Ukraine. In each case, record access will have to be carefully evaluated. Present-day Hungarian sources and maps are of little value when assessing an area now in Slovenia, even though that area may have been part of Hungary at one time. An ancestor may have stated Slavonia, Croatia and Hungary, each on a separate occasion, and all three could have been correct. In fact, that knowledge can be more helpful and narrowing than confusing if one takes the time to learn a bit about the history of Hungary. It is crucial to understand just where your ancestral location is, in contrast with where it was. The links below should help produce more understanding about the geography of the Kingdom of Hungary.
