Military Records
by Natalie Cottrill, 2004

Historically, Hungary has required military service of most of the male population. There were sometimes exceptions, but generally men 18 to 25 years of age served in some capacity.

Military muster rolls (Katonai nyilvántartási jegyzék) contain a good deal of genealogically valuable information. The muster rolls list the name (Magyar name), birth date, residence at the time of enlistment, and the parents' names for each of the soldiers.

These records are mostly available and are arranged chronologically by military unit. If the military unit is known, then research should be undertaken for the years that the ancestor was 18 to 25 years old. The unit can be determined only from surviving family papers, or doing a regional unit by unit search. Military districts were different than civil districts but were usually centered in the more well-populated regions of Hungary.

Muster Rolls for approximately 150 military districts in present-day Hungary are also present at the Family History Library (FHL). Below is a list of muster rolls that were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah for military districts in Hungary with the dates available. The records are not indexed.
