SCOPE

This gazetteer includes all the hamlets, villages, and cities found in the parts of Hesse-Darmstadt known as Starkenburg, Rhein-Hessen, and Ober-Hessen. It includes the areas included in Hesse-Darmstadt's borders as it existed from about 1866 to 1945. It describes both Protestant and Catholic records, their location, and when then begin.

It does not include the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau. The gazetteer does not include rivers, mountains, railroads, civil registration, or Jewish records.

HOW TO USE THIS GAZETTEER

The date in parenthesis following the name of the parish is either the date the earliest records start or the date when this particular town was first listed in the parish records of that parish.

Where a town is followed by a reference to another town (such as: Altenfelder Hof, see Ober-Seemen), it is generally a small farm (Hof), forest house, or farming community that was considered part of the larger community that it is referenced to.
