ProGenealogists hosts this surname soundex converter with an explanation of how the soundex is used. The soundex is a tool that formulates a "sound code" for surnames and this code is used to index large sets of records, such as the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal Censuses, and New York Passenger Lists, to name a few.
