The 1870 U.S. Federal Census
This was the eighth Federal census taken in the United States. States included in this census were:
The 1870 census taker recorded the following for *every* person and household:
- Dwelling number (number of the house in the order it was recorded)
- Family number (number of the family in the order it was recorded)
- Name
- Age
- Sex
- Color
- Occupation
- Value of real estate, if any
- Value of personal estate, if any
- Birthplace (usually state)
- If married within the year (column received a tally mark)
- If attended school within the year (column received a tally mark)
- If cannot read or write (column received a tally mark)
- Enumeration date (top of each page)
- If individual was a pauper or convict or other
