This was the eighth Federal census taken in the United States.  States included in this census were: 

The 1870 census taker recorded the following for *every* person and household:

  1. Dwelling number (number of the house in the order it was recorded)
  2. Family number (number of the family in the order it was recorded)
  3. Name
  4. Age
  5. Sex
  6. Color
  7. Occupation
  8. Value of real estate, if any
  9. Value of personal estate, if any
  10. Birthplace (usually state)
  11. If married within the year (column received a tally mark)
  12. If attended school within the year (column received a tally mark)
  13. If cannot read or write (column received a tally mark)
  14. Enumeration date (top of each page)
  15. If individual was a pauper or convict or other
