The 1850 U.S. Federal Census

This was the seventh Federal census taken in the United States.  States included in this census were:  Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin. 

The 1850 census taker recorded the following for *every* person and household:

  1. Dwelling number (number of the house in the order it was recorded)
  2. Family number (number of the family in the order it was recorded)
  3. Name
  4. Age
  5. Sex
  6. Color
  7. Occupation
  8. Value of real estate, if any
  9. Birthplace (usually state)
  10. If married within the year (column received a tally mark)
  11. If attended school within the year (column received a tally mark)
  12. If cannot read or write (column received a tally mark)
  13. Enumeration date (top of each page)
  14. If individual was a pauper or convict or other
