The 1840 U.S. Federal Census
This was the sixth Federal census taken in the United States. States included in this census were: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin. Some portions of these states have missing parts of the census (usually entire counties).
The 1840 census taker tallied the following:
- Name of head of household
- Address (usually only the county or township or town)
- Number of free white males:
- under 5 years
- 5 and under 10 years
- 10 and under 15 years
- 15 and under 20 years
- 20 and under 30 years
- 30 and under 40 years
- 40 and under 50 years
- 50 and under 60 years
- 60 and under 70 years
- 70 and under 80 years
- 80 and under 90 years
- 90 and under 100 years
- over 100 years
- Number of free white females, including head of family
- under 5 years
- 5 and under 10 years
- 10 and under 15 years
- 15 and under 20 years
- 20 and under 30 years
- 30 and under 40 years
- 40 and under 50 years
- 50 and under 60 years
- 60 and under 70 years
- 70 and under 80 years
- 80 and under 90 years
- 90 and under 100 years
- over 100 years
- Number of slaves enumerated in six different age groups
- Number of free colored enumerated in six different age groups
- Number of deaf and dumb individuals in each household
- Number of blind individuals in each household
- Number of insane and idiotic in public or private charge in each household
- Number employed in 7 different types of occupations in each household
- Number who attended school in each household
- Number of white people over 20 years who are unable to read or write in each household
- Number of pensioners for Revolutionary War or military service (includes their name and age, too)
