The 1820 U.S. Federal Census
This was the fourth Federal census taken in the United States. States included in this census were: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia. Some portions of these states have missing parts of the census (usually entire counties).
The 1820 census taker tallied the following:
- Name of head of household
- Address
- Number of free white males:
- newborn to 10 years
- 10 and under 16 years
- 16 - 18 years
- 16 and under 26 years
- 26 and under 45 years
- 45 years and over
- Number of free white females, including head of family
- newborn to 10 years
- 10 and under 16 years
- 16 and under 26 years
- 26 and under 45 years
- 45 years and over
- Number of all other free persons, except Indians not taxed
- Number of foreigners who are *not* naturalized
- Number of individuals in household engaged in agriculture
- Number of individuals in household engaged in commerce
- Number of individuals in household engaged in manufacturing
- Number of free colored persons
- Number of slaves
