The 1790 U.S. Federal Census
This was the first Federal census taken in the United States. States included in this census were: Connecticut, Delaware*, Georgia*, Kentucky*, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire*, New Jersey*, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee*, Vermont, Virginia*.
The census taker tallied the following:
- Name of head of household
- Address
- Number of free white males of 16 years and up, including head of family
- Number of free white males under 16
- Number of free white females, including head of family
- Number of all other free persons
- Number of slaves
Much of the 1790 Census was destroyed by the British during the War of 1812 (see * states above), but several states' records do remain.
