Census Records
The United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland and other
countries have long kept census records. Census records are tallies or lists of
people who lived in a certain place at a given point in time. Generally the
census lists were taken every 10 years.
United States Census Records
In the United States, Federal censuses were taken in 1790,
1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (mostly destroyed),
and every 10 years from 1900 to present. The census records for 1790 through
1840 are only statistical records. They include only the name of the head of
household and the number of people in various age categories living in the
household. Beginning in 1850, the census records includes the name of every
inhabitant.
