NOTE: His name was Sidney Francis Barnhouser. He was placed in the orphanage at St. Mary's Industrial School on Wilkens Ave, the same one where Babe Ruth was. He knew Babe Ruth. He had a sister Kathleen Fitch per Agnes. She married Walt Conners and moved to SC. The Barnhousers were from Cumberland in Western Maryland (per Agnes, Bernard, and Joseph). Agnes thought his nickname was Sidney but his real name was Sidney and he apparently took Joseph as his first name. Joseph Jr. thinks it may have been the Catholic school wanted him to have a Catholic name. Everyone called him Sidney however. Bernard said he served in World War I. Research by Christos Christou.

OBIT: Bernard Alfred Barnhouser Sr., 67, died of a stroke Sep. 23 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Born and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Barnhouser was a longtime resident of Fells Point before moving to Ballard Way two years ago. He was a retired maintenance mechanic who worked at Suburban Country Club in Reisterstown for more than 20 years. He is survived by his son, Bernard A. Barnhouser, Jr. sister Agnes Catherine Poleski and brothers Martin Thomas & Joseph Barnhouser Jr. He also leaves behind half-brother John E. OBITUARY: Austin Wiley Barnhouse, 75, of 123 E. 8th St., Apt. 123, Frederick, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at his home. Mr. Barnhouse was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Loudoun County, the son of Marshall Cephus and Lucille Virginia Barnhouse. He had been a track inspector for the railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Irene Elizabeth Barnhouse, is deceased. Surviving are a son, Austin W. Barnhouse Jr. of Hamilton; a daughter, Patricia Miller of Winchester; and sister, Shirley Bates of Jefferson, Md. A son, Marshall Barnhouse, is deceased. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home, Leesburg, with Pastor Fletcher C. Hutcheson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Furnace Mountain Cemetery, Loudoun County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
