Maria Barnhouse

Thomas & Maria are found in the Marion Co. census for 1850 & 1860 having moved to Marion Co. in 1838.  There is a biography for their son, David, in the Hardesty History of Marion Co., West Virginia on page 7.

Ewell "Vell" Dragoo

The first mention of Dragoos in Monongalia Co. WV that we found is the 1830 census.  We have a Jacob that is between 40-50 years of age and John who is between 70-80 y/o.  

In the 1840 census there are three Dragoo families; Peter 50-60 y/o, Elizabeth (widow of Ephraim) 50-60 y/o and W. Dragoo 20-30 y/o. W. Dragoo had two females 0-5 y/o and one male 5-10 y/o. This is most likely, Ewell's family.

This family moved to MI in approximately 1845.

After Jane's death Ewell married a widow, Cornelia (Lewis) Graham. Both Jane & Ewell are buried in the McCoy Cemetery, Berrien Co. MI.

Jane M. Barnhouse

The first mention of Dragoos in Monongalia Co. Information from 1850 Census:  Thomas E. BARNHOUSE is living with Henry BARNHOUSE, who is listed as head of household. Thomas is male, white, age 20 and born in Virginia.

Information from 1870 Census:  Thomas E. BARNHOUSE is listed as head of household. Thomas is male, white, age 39 and born in West Virginia. He works as a cabinet maker and his real estate is valued at $2,000.00. His personal estate is valued at $1,500.00. Information from 1880 Census:  T. E. BARNHOUSE is listed as head of household. T. E. is male, white, age 49 and born in West Virginia. His father was born in Maryland, but his mother was born in Ohio. T. E. works as a photographer. Other occupants living with T. - Sarah A. BARNHOUSE, his wife; A. L. BARNHOUSE, his son.

CENSUS:  1900 Mesa County Colorado; Allen Precinct 1; ED 74; Sheet 37b; Dwelling 890; Family 890; conducted on June 28, 1900; Thomas E. Barnhouse household.
Information from 1900 Census:  Thomas E. BARNHOUSE is listed as head of household. Thomas E. is male, white, age 70 and born June 1829 in West Virginia. His father was born in Maryland, but his mother was born in Ohio. Thomas has been married for 50 years and works as a stock raiser. He owns his home with a mortgage. Other occupants living with Thomas - Sarah A. BARNHOUSE, his wife.

BIOGRAPHY:  Contributed by family members.
Information from Biography: Thomas married his half-niece.  What we know about Thomas is from a deposition given by his half brother, Andrew, on Oct. 29, 1860 Marion County Circuit Court, 954. Thomas was the defendant in the case. It mentioned Thomas had moved to Indiana and returned to Marion Co. "... the reputation of Thomas E. Barnhouse while in this county was bad ..." He moved with his father to Indiana about 1848-9. He returned to West Virginia in 1851 or 1852. He married in WV during 1850. There are records of his making purchases in Paxton, Ford Co. IL in 1853 and being owner of a Cabinet making and Undertaking business in 1864. In 1871/2 he served as a Sheriff in Ford Co. IL. Sometime in the early 1870s he and his family were in Nebraska because one of his sons died there. In about 1877 he and his wife moved to Colorado and then later to Washington State. Thomas was in the Civil War. His pension was filed for Nov. 1, 1890. He served with Company “B”, 8th IL Infantry. Thomas died at the Soldiers Home at Orting WA on June 6th, 1911  He was one of the early residents of Buckley and held the position of the first Rural Mail carrier out of Buckley for nearly one year.  His obituary is in “The Buckley Banner”, Buckley WA, Friday, July 7, 1911. Both buried at Rainier Cemetery Thurston Co WA.

Information from 1900 Census:  Sarah A. BARNHOUSE is the wife of Thomas E. BARNHOUSE, who is listed as head of household. Sarah A. is female, white, age 69 and born June 1831 in West Virginia. Her father was born in Pennsylvania, but her mother was born in Virginia. Sarah is the mother of 7 children, only 1 of whom is still living.

From Sarah’s obituary, Buckley Banner, Buckley, WA July 19, 1907 ...” Sarah A. Higgins ... wife of Thomas E. Barnhouse ... died near Ranier WV July 11, 1907, age 77y, 1m and 4d.  She had seven children of which all save two died in infancy ... She leaves Husband, 3 sister and 2 brothers to mourn her death ... an active member of the Methodist Eliscopal church since early childhood ... She was a woman of much individuality, great energy and determination; a lover of all that was beautiful, good and dainty, for which characteristic her mother called her “Lady Sarah,” a nickname she loved and clung to in her last years.” Lady Sarah is inscribed on her tombstone.
