BIOGRAPHY: VINTON COUNTY’S LIVING PIONEERS NO 144. WILKESVILLE TWP’S BERT HARDER, 86, HAS BUILT MANY VINTON HOMES; STILL TRAVELS.
Information from Biography: Christmas has a deep significance for 86 year old Bert Harder who lives on the Point Rock Road near Wilkesville. On Dec. 24 he will be 87 years of age, and he was married on Feb. 23, 1893. He was born, Herbert Race Harder, Dec 24, 1871 in Columbus, Kansas, the county seat of Cherokee, Kansas, one of ten children of Hudson Race Harder and Martha Jane Bishop Harder. He is of Scotch Irish ancestry, his father was a Civil War veteran. 'I’ve contributed a lot to Ohio I think. I’ve built many homes, barns, business buildings, and my family has turned out well, and are making contributions to this state,' Bert says. He’s proud of his family and proud of the fact he was never arrested in 87 years. Four of his children, Keith, Karl, Worth and Shirley Peters have been school teachers and Mrs. Peters still is a substitute teacher for the North and South Wilton Schools. Bert’s father was a farmer and a minister of the Latter Day Saints Church, and was assigned to Southern Ohio. When Bert was 21, he joined his father in Vinton Co., and soon was living here, engaged in the carpentry and house contracting business. He was one of ten children, 7 boys and three girls, and six are still living, including Leland Harder, San Diego, Calif; A. A. Harder, retired newspaper published of Chico, Calif; Marce O. Harder, Cushman, Ark; Mrs. Bertha Snow, Sand Springs OK; and Mrs. Manon Cates, Forth Worth, TX. Our subject has built houses everywhere, except the house on Rt. 689 in which he lives with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peters. His son was formerly state highway superintendent in Vinton Co. and now is employed by the state highway department in Athens Co. One of Bert’s first jobs was a contract to build the one-room school building at Creola, and later, the Creola LDS Church. He also build four homes, and remodeled several in Athens. He build a number of houses which still stand in McArthur, including the Lyman Long home and three homes for the famed Shockey Brothers, who were noted for the musical ability and for their band. He also built houses in Radcliff, Wilkesville and a number in the surrounding rural areas, including one for George Radekin, and one for his brother, John. He built a number of barns and store building, both before and after World War I. He built the Hawk Station School, and an elementary building for Columbia Twp. In Meigs County, he built homes in Gallipolis and a filling station there. Back when Oreton was a booming coal mining center Bert Harder had a hand in building 17 of the 67 houses built on contract to house Oreton’s mining families. He also built the big store at Oreton which Dave Eberts ran for so many years and which was destroyed by fire over a decade ago. 'My best house was a crazy rock house I built in the depression days out in Oklahoma. Work was scarce around Wilkesville, so I went out there, and built this fine home for $5000.  It would cost four or five times that much now, maybe more' he says. When Bert decided to stay in the Wilkesville area, he boarded with Minnie Fitzpatrick whose comely daughter soon caught his eye. She was a school teacher, and on December 23, 1893 he married her, Emma Ethel Fitzpatrick. They went to Iowa where their oldest child was born, then returned to Ohio. A. E. Fitpatrick now lives in the Fitzpatrick home. Bert purchased a farm at a sheriff’s sale in McArthur, 60 acres, with a log house and log barn, was on the Fitzpatrick road near Radcliff. After the house burned Bert built a new one then sold the farm and purchased the Tom Findley farm on Rt. 160 between Radcliff and Wilkesville and lived there for 20 years before he purchased the house in which he now lives which is now owned by the Peters. He also ran a general store in Wilkesville for a year. Mr. and Mrs. Harder had eight children, two of whom are deceased. The living children include Keith C. Harder, veteran civil service employee who lives in Washington, D.C.; Worth H. Harder who lives in Basil, Ohio; Karl M. Harder, Ewington, Ohio; Mrs. Shirley Peters, Carpenter Route 1; Robert J. Harder Basil and Mrs. Minnie H. Spires Columbus. 'I always liked the Will family connected with the bank in McArthur' he recalls. Once when I was a contractor my account was overdrawn and I was in the bank on a bitter cold day to straighten out the matter. I walked out with a new overcoat (I didn’t have any at the time) and a thousand dollars more as a personal loan. You can’t beat that.' Yes, Christmas is coming and so is Berth Harder’s 87th birthday. 'I always felt cheated, being born so close to Christmas, because the gifts were fewer' he laughs.  But those who know Bert Harder, a man whose mind is as clear today as it was 60 years ago, know he’s just kidding. Christmas has a deeper meaning for him.

"MAN DIES FROM HEAD WOUND RECEIVED FROM CRANK.
Arrest George Moore On Charge of Assault with Intent to Kill.
Earl COTTRILL died in Holzer Hospital at 7:30 o'clock this (Wednesday) morning.
Earl COTTRILL, 45, Radcliff, is dying in Holzer Hospital, Gallipolis, and Mr. and Mrs. George MOORE, also of Radcliff, are bound over to the grand jury, following a quarrel Monday evening.
COTTRILL received a crushed skull when he was struck over the head by an automobile crank allegedly weilded by his son, Clovis, 17, during the altercation.
Mr. and Mrs. MOORE were given a preliminary hearing in the court of Justice of the Peace G. W. SPECHT here Tuesday afternoon, after a warrant for their arrest had been sworn out. Authorities here are desirous of checking upon MOORE's story that COTTRILL, and not he (MOORE) struck COTTRILL.
The younger COTTRILL, whom MOORE claimed had struck his father with the crank, had nothing to say for publication about the matter.
The auto crank, believed intended for MOORE, struck the elder COTTRILL on the head, the crank penetrating the skull bone deep into the brain tissue, causing destruction of part of the left frontal lobe of the brain.
According to Dr. J. L. FRAZER, Wellston, who gave emergency treatment to COTTRILL before sending him to the hospital, COTTRILL has little or no chance for recovery.
MOORE Monday night hired a taxi and came to McArthur, where he told his version of the accident to Sheriff Harold PARTEE.
MOORE's story as told the sheriff, was corroborated by his statements made at the local physician's office.
He said Sunday night he was calling at the home of his father-in-law, Ed QUEEN near Radcliff, and left his car in the road, walking a short distance to the home. Upon his return, MOORE said, he found the car had been moved quite a distance down the raod and into a ditch which contained mud.
MOORE said he went to COTTRILL immediately afterward and accused him of pushing the car, and in his own words said "COTTRILL that was a dirty trick." COTTRILL became angry, but nothing resulted from the encounter Sunday evening.
Monday evening, while MOORE was on his way back to his father-in-law's home, accompanied by his wife, he encountered COTTRILL and the latter's sixteen-year-old son, driving their car. They stopped, and a quarrel ensued, which led to a scuffle.
During the altercation, MOORE said the elder COTTRILL threw a hammer, striking MOORE on the arm, causing a joint injury and laceration of the arm.
Later MOORE grabbed COTTRILL and was holding him down on the ground. COTTRILL called for his son for help. The boy went to the automobile and found the crank. He aimed it at MOORE, according to the latter, but in the scuffle, the two men's positions became changed, largely, it is stated through the ministrations of MOORE's wife, and the crank instead of striking MOORE, hit COTTRILL above the left eye.
The elder COTTRILL was sent on to the Holzer Hospital, Gallipolis, from Wellston in Gaskill and King's ambulance. Questioned at Dr. J. L. FRAZER's office, MOORE told the same story. No statement was obtained from the boy, and at Gallipolis Tuesday it was reported that Mrs. COTTRILL had no statement to make concerning her husband's injury.
At the Holzer Hospital this morning it was stated that COTTRILL's condition is very critical and that he has little or no chance for recovery.
Earl COTTRILL is a brother-in-law of Dr. B.V. SWISHER, prominent Radcliff physician, and well known and respected in the community, where he operates a coal mine. He is also a salesman for a Huntinton W.Va. candy company. Four years ago he was an unsuccessful candidate for Vinton county treasurer on the Republican ticket.
COTTRILL drives a truck between Radcliff and Springfield, making a trip everyday. Shortly after COTTRILL arrived at the hospital, Mrs. COTTRILL and a daughter, Ardis, age 20, came to the hospital with a neighbor, Mrs. Cline HOLCOMB.
COTTRILL was accompanied by a son, Clovis, age 17, who helped transport his father to Wellston, where Dr. J. L. FRAZER sent him at once to the hospital. Clovis, Ardis, and another son, Vale, age 22, are living. COTTRILL is a justice of the peace for Vinton township."

"COTTRILL FAMILY GIVES VERSION OF FATAL ALTERCATION
That Clovis COTTRILL did not hurl the crank which resulted in his father's death, December 19, is reiterated in a statement made by members of his family, which purports to tell the true version of the incidents. The family charges that the crank was in the hands of George MOORE. The statement prepared by members of the family is here given:
"Earl COTTRILL, aged 42, died in Holzer hospital, Wednesday morning, December 19.
COTTRILL, who operated a coal mine on the COTTRILL farm one mile east of Radcliff, had gone to the mine to get a load of coal and found MOORE's car parked across the private driveway, and it was necessary to push the car out of the way to get the coal.
MOORE became enraged at this and followed COTTRILL to the garage on Tuesday night and tried to get him out of the truck for a fight. COTTRILL told him to go on about his business as he would not fight there. MOORE threatened to 'get him' later. COTTRILL went home, got in his car and took his son, Clovis, 17 years old, and drove out to the mine on business, telling his wife they would be home as soon as he saw if there was enough coal out for a load. When they reached the mine he told his son to stay in the car, and he would be right back, but had only taken a few steps when he called for help.
The doctors found he had been hit on the back of the head, and when Clovis reached him, MOORE had hit him another lick on the head and had drawn the crank to hit him again when Clovis wrenched the crank from his hand and stepped back just as he saw Mrs. MOORE with another crank raised to strike Clovis. He threw up his hand in time to ward off the blow from his head, then she hit him in the face with her hand and bent his glasses. MOORE helped Clovis to put Earl COTTRILL in the car and bring him to Dr. FRAZER's office. Clovis did not strike or throw at anyone.
Earl COTTRILL was the son of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. COTTRILL, was a Master Mason. He is survivied by his wife, two sons, Vale and Clovis, one daughter, Ardis, father and mother, five brothers, Andrew H., Floyd D., Mark H., Carl U., and Frank W. COTTRILL; three sisters:  Mrs. B.V. SWISHER, Mrs. Raymond HOLCOMB and Mrs. Lawrence MORTON.
Funeral services were conducted, Friday, December 21, by Rev. KIRKENDALL and the Wilkesville Order of Masons."
