Information from Biography:
"Son of an early Vinton County sheriff is William Edward COTTRILL, 80, who lives on the Vales Mill road in Vinton Township, a youthful looking man, tall and lean, who has spent virtually his entire life within a 10-mile area.
He lives in a beautiful valley on Carpenter Route 1, just below Union Ridge, and is the last of his family, children of former Sheriff, William Cottrill.
He was born February 6, 1832 in McArthur, the son of William and Martha GREGORY COTTRILL. He was born in the old Jack SWAIM property on High Street while his father was serving two terms as sheriff. His father was a farmer, timberman, carpenter, and dealt in cattle and livestock, was twice married, so Will COTTRILL had three half-sisters, but he's the youngest, and the only surviving member of his family.
He went to two schools, the nearby COTTRILL school his father helped build, and the Vales Mill school. His teachers included Willie GIBBS, Mary Lytel McKIBBEN, Billy Bart GREGORY (for three terms), Phoena GREGORY, Lola WILLIAMS, Ida OGLE and Homer and Laura BOWEN. He went to school with the PERRY children, Asa and Frank CLINE, Myrtle Holcomb CLINE, Sammy and Ada TRAINER, and Tom COLLINS, who lives down the road from the COTTRILL's residence.
""I've done a man's work since I was in my mid-teens, as a farm laborer, hoeing corn for $.50 and a dollar a day, and later as a teamster, working in the timber and at coal mines, logging, and often working as many as six or seven yoke of oxen"", Mr. COTTRILL says.
He's a friend of Willie ROSS, another Vinton County pioneer who is also a noted ox-driver. Mr. COTTRILL also farmed, and retired about 15 years ago, now lives alone, and has a garden, does his own housework.
He married twice, once to Lizzie BENNINGTON, a neighbor girl he married August 9, 1907. Mrs. COTTRILL died in 1911, leaving three small children, a fourth died in childbirth.
Mr. COTTRILL has a daughter, Mrs. Lola WAGNER, Columbus; and a son, Henry Edward COTTRILL of near Grayson, Kentucky, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is divorced from his second wife, the former Malvina PERRY RUTHERFORD.
Not much of a joiner in organizations, he's "Uncle Will" to a good many Vinton Countians, and is widely related. His health is now good, and he's agile, able to kick his foot as high as the fireplace mantel. He wears his glasses only to read, and has a fine memory."
