"Aged Vinton Twp. Resident Succumbs.
Vinton E. COTTRILL, aged about 72 years, died at his home in Vinton township, last Wednesday, following a very short period of illness. He was a son of Andrew and Joanna COTTRILL and died on the farm where he was born. Mr. COTTRILL was one of the largest land owners in the county. He farmed on quite an extensive scale and was a firm believer in scientific methods of conducting his business.
Mr. COTTRILL leaves his wife and nine children, namely: Mark H., Andrew, Floyd, Frank and Carl, Mrs. B. V. SWISHER, Mrs. Raymond HOLCOMB and Mrs. Lawrence MORTON, all living in or near the Radcliff vicinity. One son, Earl, was killed a short time ago and two children died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at the U.B. church at Radcliff, on Saturday, conducted by Elder A. B. KIRKENDALL of Creola. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery."

Information from Obituary:
"Vinton Ellsworth, son of Andrew and Joanna (BARNHOUSE) COTTRILL was born near Radcliff, Ohio, June 30, 1864 and departed this life May 27, 1936, aged 71 years 10 months and 27 days.
His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry COTTRILL emigrated to Columbia township, Meigs County from Virginia in 1820; and in 1853 his parents moved to the farm in Vinton township where the subject of our sketch was born and died. They were pioneer settlers having cleared the land from the wilderness to build their house and establish their home.
He was the youngest of three children. Two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca McLAUGHLIN and Mrs. Minnie STEWART preceded him in death. Mr. COTTRILL was married to Elizabeth WOODYARD August 5, 1889 and to their union eleven children were born. Of these two Clyde and Clarice May died in infancy. The family circle was again broken when another son, Alva Earl passed to the spirit world December 19, 1934. He is survived by his wife, five sons, Andrew H., Floyd D., Mark H., Carl V., and Frank W., all of Radcliff; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth SWISHER of Radcliff, Mrs. Maude HOLCOMB and Mrs. Elva MORTON of Carpenter, 21 grandchildren and a number of relatives and friends.
He never united with any denomination, but was reared in the Faith of the Latter Day Saints Church, and always contributed to its support. He was a public spirited citizens, a friend of youth and education.
He served several terms as Township Trustee and member of the Board of Education. He was a successful business man, and scientific farmer. He was hard working and industrious, doing more in later years than his feeble strength would permit. His health has been poor for over two years, and he never fully recovered from the shock of his sons tragic death.
While he was known to be in failing health, the end came unexpectedly Wednesday evening. Again we are reminded of the uncertainty of life. "As for man his days are as grass; as a flower of the field so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more." In closing we are reminded of the words of Whittier:
And while in life's late afternoon
Where cool and long the shadows grow
I walk to meet the night that soon
Shall shape and shadow overflow.
I cannot feel that thou art far
Since near at end the angels are
And when the sunset gates unbar
Shall I not see thee waiting stand
And white against the evening star,
The welcoming of thy beckoning hand?"

Information from Biography:
"One of the most pleasant events that has occurred in our neighborhood for sometime was a surprise party given in honor of Mrs. V. E. COTTRILL, Radcliff, Ohio on the 8th of January, it being her 46th birthday. Mrs. COTTRILL having the unpleasant symptom of a headache, she was very comfortably situated in her large rocker before the fire, giving no thought whatsoever as to what was going on inside or out of her home.
About 10 am carriages were driving up, after our number had reached 53 we thought it time to march in. Mrs. COTTRILL greeted all with a welcome smile and a hearty handshake. One good lady informed her that it was her birthday. No one asked her if she was surprised, as her expression told it all. Seven rooms of their beautiful home were thrown open to all. A bountiful repast was furnished by her five daughters and neighbors. The party was well entertained by the splendid music rendered by Miss Laura WELLS, Mrs. Earl COTTRILL and Frank BECKLEY.
Mrs. COTTRILL received the following presents: fruit set, Mr. and Mrs. William SHARP; large spoon tray, Mrs. Dayton KINKEAD; scarf, Raymond HOLCOMB; teaspoon, Floyd COTTRILL; fine linen set, Mr. and Mrs. L. T. BLORE; cushion and silver fruit dish, Ruth COTTRILL; china fruit dish, Mrs. Debbie FITZPATRICK; two handkerchiefs, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson SHARP; china dish, Mr. and Mrs. Arty JEFFERS; large parlor lamp, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer MORTON; comb, Minnie STEWART; one pair of hose, Emma HARDER; money, P.D. BARNHOUSE; one dozen silver napkin rings and one dozen napkins, Maude COTTRILL; handkerchief, Paul BLORE; large fruit dish, Etta COTTRILL; rug, Mr. and Mrs. Earl COTTRILL; apron, Andrew COTTRILL; three handkerchiefs Mr. and Mrs. Earl CUCKLER; two handkerchiefs, Mrs. Mahala HAWKINS and son; glass sugar bowl and pitcher, Elva COTTRILL; three handkerchiefs, Mrs. and Mrs. S.J. JEFFERS; toothpick holder, Mark COTTRILL; large dish, Rose COOPER; handkerchief, Mary WINSHIP; China dish. Mr. and Mrs. Jap HUSTON; large china fruit dish, B. V. SWISHER.
This was the most complete surprise the writer has ever attended. Mrs. COTTRILL plainly informed us that no mob of 50 could play "hide and seek" around her house again without her knowing it."

"The day was beautiful, and the crowd could not have been more jolly than those who met at the COTTRILL home, Sunday January 8, to help Mrs. V. E. COTTRILL celebrate her 70th birthday. Although she was looking for guests little did she think of what was going on until the house was full which made it a complete surprise. The three large decorated cakes which were got special for the occassion (beside 5 others) added to the attractiveness of the well-filled table of good things. Those present to enjoy the bountiful spread were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence MORRIS, Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Cary WOODYARD, Carpenter; Mr. and Mrs. Newton WOODYARD, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer GRADY, Cincinnati; Mr. and Mrs. M. BIOGRAPHY3: Vinton County Democrat-Enquirer Living Pioneers Series; No. 226. Information from Biography 3:
"'Just call me the Grandma Moses of Radcliff,' says Mrs. Elizabeth COTTRILL, 92, who lives with her daughter, Mrs. Ruth SWISHER in a modern and comfortable home at Radcliff.
Although she is confined to a wheelchair much of her time, she paints and she quilts and is noted for her needlework. One of the oldest residents in Vinton county, she is widely related.
It took us about five years to get Mrs. COTTRILL's permission to write her pioneer sketch, and it was her grandson, Raymond COTTRILL of Hamden, a Vinton county commissioner; and Mrs. SWISHER who prevailed on her to publish her story.
Elizabeth (WOODYARD) COTTRILL was born in Scioto [sic] township of Meigs county, January 8, 1869, just after the Civil War had ended.
Her parents were Harrison WOODYARD and Jane (TEWKSBARY) WOODYARD. Mrs. COTTRILL was the oldest daughter in the family of six children, two girls and four boys, and only one brother, C. C. WOODYARD, 87 of Albany, is still living.
Her grandfather migrated to Athens county from West Virginia. They were of Scotch and English descent. Mrs. COTTRILL's father was a farmer, and a carpenter by trade.
"I can remember my mother telling of Morgan's Raid during the Civil War. She took our horses into the woods and hid them to protect them from being stolen by General Morgan," she recalls.
She helped her mother in carding and weaving the wool to make clothing for the Woodyard family. Dye was made from walnut hulls to color some of the home-made wool.
Mrs. COTTRILL attended school at Bowers, Pagetown and at Atwood Institute to get the equivalent of a high school education, something rare in her times. The Atwood Institute was at Albany, and held fall, spring and summer terms.
Her first teacher was Fletcher MEDKIFF. Others included Enda HANING, Will HART, and Pat CHEEDLE. She attended Sunday School and church at Bowers' Free Will Baptist church where she was baptized when she was 16 years old. In later years her church membership was transferred from Bowers to Carpenter.
She was untied in marriage to Vinton E. COTTRILL on August 5, 1899. Her husband's grandparents were true pioneers, migrating to Ohio from Virginia, in what is now Vinton Twp., and as early settlers, cleared the land from the wilderness, and built their log homes.
All her married life was spent on the big, 800-acre Vinton twp. COTTRILL farm, and she did her share of the work, milking cows, tending the chickens and raising turkeys and helping in the garden, as well as doing the housework, and cooking for the several hired hands who "lived in" on the farm to help in the bog farm operation. Other farm hands lived in their own nearby homes and came to work daily.
Her husband, Vint COTTRILL, died May 27, 1936. She lived with a son, Carl COTTRILL until her son-in-law, Dr. Bertie V. SWISHER of Radcliff died December 15, 1951, and then she came to Radlicff to live with her daughter, Ruth, who was Radcliff Posmatster for 46 years, starting when she was a teen-ager, and retiring just over a year ago. Carl COTTRILL died Nov. 6, 1944.
Mrs. COTTRILL did all possible, caring for the aged citizens of the area, including Mr. PLUMMER, Eliza BARNHOUSE, and her husband's mother, Jo Anna COTTRILL, and she always was ready to help a neighbor.
Mrs. COTTRILL is the mother of eleven children, two died in infancy, and the family circle was broken with Carl's death, and also by the death of Alva Earl COTTRILL Dec. 19, 1934.
There are seven living children, including Andrew and Floyd COTTRILL of Radcliff; Maude HOLCOMB of Carpenter, Ruth SWISHER and Frank COTTRILL of Radcliff; Elva MORTON of Carpenter, and Mark COTTRILL of Springfield. Mrs. COTTRILL has 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren.
Five years ago, when she ws 87, she was stricken with a gall bladder attack and later entered Holzer Hospital for surgery. The past three years she has been confined to a wheel chair with arthritis and age, but she still keeps busy, although she can't help with the housework and gardening as she did until a few years ago.
Looking much younger than her 92 years, she never complains about her handicap, and her mind is sharp and alert, her memory is good, and she's interested in current events.
Her eyesight is wonderful, her hearing is keen and she keeps her fingers busy with two hobbies, needlework and painting.
Still most interested in her family, she makes them quilts just as she made their clothing years ago on the COTTRILL family farm. She pieces quilts and crochets, and of course, makes extraordinary pieces such as a postage stamp quilt and others.
A lover of beautiful things, she took up painting several years ago, and that's how she got the "Grandma Moses" title. She excells in landscapes, still life, and extraordinary Japaneses prints.
She came to Vinton twp. when she was 20, 1889.
It had more people then, more houses, more stores. The Hocking Valley railroad ran two passenger trains daily, one regular freight, and extras, coal and ore trains. My husband shipped cattle via rail to Cincinnati and Chicago, and then would go to St. Louis, buy cattle, and ship them back to Racliff.
"We always had a full house at home as our farm was big and it took a lot of people to run it. Frank and Andrew, my sons, still live on part of the home farm while George and Thelma LEITCH now live in the big two-story frame eight-room house that was built in 1897 after a log house built by my husband's grandparents was torn down on the same site," she recalls.
Mrs. COTTRILL welcomes company, and finds happiness visiting with her friends, neighbors, and kin, and she's well-cared for by her daughter, Ruth."

The family circle was broken again by the death of Carl Vinton on November 6, 1944.
On May 27, 1936, the husband and father passed to his reward. She continued to reside in the family home with her son Carl and wife until the death of a son-in-law, Dr. B.V. Besides these she was artistic and found time to do beautiful needlework, fine sewing, crocheting, and quiltmaking. In later years she took up painting and did many still lifes, landscapes, and Japanese prints. She also read widely, and was an interesting conversationalist.
Her health had been failing for the past six years, and for over a year has had constant care. This was rendered willingly by the daughter with whom she made her home, who was assisted by many other members of the family. Everything possible was done to relieve her suffering and make her last days comfortable. The end came quietly Monday May 21, 1962 at 5:00 pm.
In closing we are reminded of the following lines of poetry from an unknown author:
He sees when their footsteps falter when their hearts
grow weak and faint;
He marks when their strength is failing and listens to
each complaint;
He bids them rest for a season, for the pathway has
grown too steep;
And foder in His green pastures, He giveth His loved
ones sleep.
Weep not that their toils are over, weep not that their
race is run;
God grant we shall rest as calmly when our work like theirs
is done;
Till then we would yield with gladness, our treasures to
Him to keep;
And rejoice in the sweet assurance "He giveth His loved
ones sleep"."

Well done, at last." BURIAL: Funeral Memorial Pamphlet.

Information from Obituary:
"Carl Vinton, son of Vinton E. and Elizabeth WOODYARD was born near Radcliff, Ohio December 6, 1906 and departed this life at the same homestead, November 3, 1944 aged 37 years, 10 months, 27 days.
He was one of a family of eleven children, three of whom with his father have preceded him in death. Those preceding him were two brothers, Earl and Clyde and one sister, Clarice.
He spent his entire life on the home farm in Vinton Township. He received his grade shcool education in the local school district then attended high school at Wilkesville for three years.
One November 6, 1926, he was united in marriage to Thelma R. GREGORY and to their union two children, Janice Rosetta, and Melvin Vinton were born.
He was a charter member of the Vinton Township Grange and the Vinton County Pomona Grange. He was much interested in Grange work and ideals, always attending their meetings until ill health prevented him from doing so. He was the Master of the local Subordinate Grange at the time of his death. He was also affiliated with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Wellston Aerie.
He is survived by his wife, baby son, and daughter, aged Mother, four brothers, Andrew H., Floyd D., Frank W., of Radcliff, and Mark H., of Springfield; three sisters Mrs. Ruth SWISHER of Radcliff, Mrs. Maude HOLCOMB and Mrs. Elva MORTON of Carpenter Route.
Carl was a kind husband and indulgent father, an obediant son and an obliging neighbor who was always willing to lend a helping hand in sickness and death. His passing leaves a vacant place in the community which will be hard to fill.
Six months ago, he became ill and when he submitted to an operation it was found that he was suffering from a rare malady for which there was little hope of recovery. Six weeks ago he became bedfast and despite the most careful nursing and everything known to medical science, he steadily grew weaker until 12:30 Thursday night when the Grim Reaper came and his spirit returned to the God who gave it.
It is not given to us to understand why one so industrious and active should be called from his home and his duties when he was so badly needed, but we can only submit our will to His and say "The Lord giveth and the Lord Taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord".
Not now, but in the coming years, it may be in the better land
We'll read the meaning of our tears, and there, sometime, we'll
understand.
We'll catch the broken threads again, and finish what we here began.
Heaven will the mysteries explain, and then, ah then, we'll
understand.
We'll know why coulds instead of rain
Were over many a cherished plan
Why song was ceased when scarce began
Tis there, sometime, we'll understand.
God knows the way, He holds the key
He guides us with unerring hand
Sometime with tearless eyes we'll see
Yes, there, up there, we'll understand."
