Mrs. Barnhouse was born in Eldon, Mo. She was employed by the telephone company in the 1950s and was an active union member. She was a phone bank volunteer for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in Denver. Survivors include her mother, Stella Kaelin of Denver; one sister, Mida Kaelin of New Paltz, N.Y.; five brothers, William Smith of Salt Lake City, Clyde Smith, Tom Smith, Douglas Smith and David Smith, all of Denver; and three grandchildren.
