"This indenture made this third day of August in the year eighteen hundred and seven between Frances Barnhouse of Harford County state of Maryland of the one part and James R. Gladden of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth the said Frances Barnhouse hath bound his son named John Barnhouse aged sixteen years old the fourth day of June last-past unto the said James R. Gladden except one week in each harvest to learn the art and mystery of shoe and boot making and to serve him the said James R. Gladden until the said John Barnhouse doth arrive to the age of twenty-one years as a good and faithful apprentice in all cases. And the said James R. Gladden binds himself to find the said apprentice sufficient accommodations as to clothes meat drink washing and lodging fitting for an apprentice and to give him the said apprentice at the expiration of his apprenticeship one good new suit of apparel and kit of tools. John Barnheiser 1776 Washington Co, MD a soldier of 1776 claimed pension until his death. He would come from his home in South Mt. to get his monthly pension check. He died June 1849 at Quincy at age 106y. per Biographical Record of Washington Co Vol 1. by Thomas J.C. Williams p. 259 copy. 1906. Johnh Barnheiser private receives $96 annually part of pension, has already received $1,503.46, was in the Maryland Line. pensioned in Washington Co on Mar. 5, 1819, pension to commence June 13, 1818. His age given as 79. In 1818, a list of Pensioners from MD showed a John Barnheiser having served as private from Pennsylvania.  Submitted by Christou Jr., Christos.

John Barnheiser June 13, 1818 Washington Co, MD DAR Pension Book 135 lists John Barnheiser S34,367. applied for pension June 13, 1818 age 65y. Resided at Washington Co, MD. He enlised at Reading, PA in 1776 served in Capt. John Spohn's Co 5th PA Regt. commanded by Col. Magaw, before the term of 1 year for which he had enlisted had expired, he was taken prisoner at Ft. Washington, taken to NY where he was held several months, when paroled. He was in the battle of Long Island, was discharged at Philadelphia, PA. He later volunteered and served 6 months under Gen. Gowatch against the Indians. In 1782 he enlisted at Reading, PA and served 7 months as a pvt in Col. Butler's PA Regt. was discharged at Pennington, NJ. On Aug. 8, 1820, John Barnheiser aged 65 years states that his second wife is 41 years old and he was has 7 children living with him. William age 16, Daniel age 14, Lydia age 11, Samuel age 9, Deborah age 6, James age 4, Joseph age 2. Cert. 7367 issued Mar. 5, 1819, act of Mar. 18, 1818 at $8 per mo. from June 13, 1818 Agency, MD, Service PA, Rank Private. Letter to DAR in 1938 says John Barnheiser received last payment of pension covering the period Sep 4, 1848 to Mar. 4, 1849 at the Maryland Pension Agency, Baltimore on Mar. 156, 1849 to F.C. Cook, as attorney for the pensioner. Richard BARNHOUSE, Pvt. under Capt. Samuel Duvall, 3 Aug - 3 Cot 1814. Frederick Co.; m. c. 17 Jan 1816 (date of Frederick Co., Marriage License) Margaret Jane WHITE.  On 16 Aug 1855, James A. May, residing Washington, DC applied for bounty land for his wards, Jonas P. Barnhouse and Sarah Jane Barnhouse (wife of James A. May).  They were minor children of Richard Barnhouse and Margaret Jane Barnhouse.  Margaret Jane m. Joseph Barnhouse brother of her former husband, c. 19 Nov 1849.  On 30 Sep 1859 Joshua Stocks and William Stocks, residing Loudoun Co., Virginia, gave the birth dates of the children of Richard Barnhouse:  Jonas P. Barnhouse, b. 29 Mar 1836; Sarah Jane May, 29 Mar 1836; John Barnhouse b. 14 Sep 1819, Randolph Barnhouse b. 12 Feb 1827; Sidney Barnhouse b. 17 Feb 1831.  Acq. (1855): Mary W. Marlow and Martha L. Smith, residing Loudoun Co., Virginia.  On 12 Apr 1862 James Wilcott and Harrison Harper state that they were informed by Sarah Jane May that her brother Jonas P. Barnhouse was engaged in rebel services against U.S. and had been so engaged for about 12 mos.  He belonged to Capt. Mead's Cav. He was born Sep. 21, 1894 in Cumberland, MD. He was inducted on Sep. 5, 1918 as a private. He served in Co I 7th Engr. Training Regt. Camp Humphreys VA and Co D 8th Engr.
